Open horizon at first light — PTSD treatment on the Gold Coast
Does this sound familiar?

Is PTSD getting in the way of you enjoying life again?

Have you been struggling with the emotional pain of a past traumatic or distressing experience — wishing you could just push the pain away and get back to the old you?
Does your mind keep returning to unpleasant memories, even as you try to push them down — or do you use distractions or substances to avoid them?
Do you avoid certain people, objects, places, or smells because they distress you or remind you of the past?
Has this resulted in poor sleep or nightmares — or moments where you “relive” the trauma, sometimes as though it is happening all over again?
Have you felt emotionally “numb”, or noticed you don’t enjoy things like you used to? Do you worry whether you’ll ever get past this and move on?
Are you easily startled or “on edge”, more aware of who and what is around you — or more irritable, frustrated, or angry, and easily overwhelmed?

If you relate to any of the above, it is possible you could be experiencing post-traumatic stress symptoms, or a condition called PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder). The pain of unresolved trauma or PTSD is very real. Your mind wants to keep taking you back to the trauma, all while you try to avoid those painful memories at all costs — and it can become so debilitating that daily life feels overwhelming, sleep is a struggle, and you barely recognise your old self. People may tell you that you should be “over” it by now, leaving you wondering if something is wrong with you.

You can heal from trauma & PTSD

It is not uncommon to feel you’ll never get past the trauma — especially if it feels intense or happened long ago. The good news is that healing from trauma and PTSD is possible, no matter how long ago it was first experienced. Ashley Gilmour, our Clinical Psychologist, has extensive experience assessing, diagnosing and treating trauma and PTSD, and has supported people of many ages to heal from recent traumas as well as traumas experienced more than 60 years earlier in life.

What treatment involves

Tailored to you — never one-size-fits-all

The treatment approach we use together depends on you — your specific goals and your current level of emotional coping. Some clients prefer to move at a very gradual pace, because that is what feels manageable; others prefer to get to the root of the trauma and shift it to progress more quickly. There is no right or wrong way to move through your own trauma — everyone is different, with their own capacity and preferences.

From the second session onwards, we focus mainly on treatment work aligned with your goals, clarifying any questions and checking how you’re finding the process, so we can adjust as needed. We also understand that people with trauma or PTSD may face unexpected situations or “crises” between sessions, and where needed we’ll help you through these while continuing to move toward your goals.

At the conscious level

Managing anxiety symptoms, developing better sleep, easing nightmares and flashbacks, coping with daily stressors in healthier ways, and reducing any substances used to cope.

At the subconscious level

Where you feel ready, gently shifting the trauma at a deeper level — so it can be cleared and healed, rather than pushed down — supporting long-term wellbeing.

All interventions are always provided at a pace that is safe for you, in a supportive, comfortable environment. With the help of a caring, understanding and experienced Clinical Psychologist who understands trauma and PTSD, you can begin moving toward inner peace again.

About PTSD treatment

I’ve had my trauma for so long — how could you help me heal it?+
It’s a common concern, especially if you’ve seen therapists before and found it unhelpful, or feel you must simply live with the effects forever. Having supported many people to recover from PTSD, Ashley is passionate about helping people understand that healing is possible no matter how long ago the trauma occurred or how complex it is — when a person makes the choice to heal. That choice matters: it sets the intention and gives you permission to gently look at the painful aspects so they can be healed.
Won’t treatment mean re-experiencing the pain all over again?+
A very valid concern — re-traumatisation is a real experience that people understandably try to avoid. That’s exactly why it’s crucial to work with a Clinical Psychologist experienced and equipped in treating trauma and PTSD. The approaches Ashley uses are chosen to help you heal in the least traumatising way possible, working with the trauma directly but in a way where you remain safely detached rather than reliving it. Throughout, Ashley monitors how you’re coping and adjusts accordingly. Afterwards, clients typically report the trauma no longer upsets them as much, and often that it wasn’t as overwhelming as they feared.
Isn’t psychological treatment expensive?+
In Australia, we are fortunate that Medicare provides a rebate (currently $149.05 per session for up to 10 sessions per calendar year) when you see a Clinical Psychologist, making experienced care considerably more affordable. It’s also worth considering the cost of leaving trauma or PTSD untreated — many people find their daily functioning, work, physical health and relationships significantly affected, which carries its own financial and personal cost. Investing in your wellbeing is exactly that: an investment.
