Parents comforting their teenager during a supportive family therapy session on the Gold Coast

Families are complex — and that’s normal

Every family is a web of different personalities, histories and pressures, so it’s no surprise that tensions build and can be hard to untangle on your own. Difficulties can show up in all sorts of ways — ongoing conflict or arguments, a breakdown in communication, a child or teenager who has become withdrawn or is acting out, or the strain of big changes like separation, blending two families, illness or grief. Often it isn’t that any one person is doing something wrong — it’s that patterns have quietly built up over time that no longer work for everyone.

Family therapy brings in a calm, impartial third party to help everyone feel heard, without blame or taking sides. Rather than treating one person as “the problem”, we look at how your family works together as a whole, gently unpick the cycles that keep causing friction, and help each of you understand what sits beneath the other’s reactions. From there, we work on practical ways to communicate, repair trust, and set the kind of healthy boundaries that help a family feel close and secure again.

Sessions are a warm, supportive space where every member of the family — including children and teenagers — can be heard at their own pace. You don’t need to have anything worked out before you come in; the first step is simply starting the conversation together, with someone alongside you to guide it.

Common reasons families come to us

When family therapy can help

Conflict between siblings, or between children and parents or grandparents
Parenting differences and co-parenting challenges
Separation, divorce, and joint-custody concerns
Blended and step-family adjustment

Balancing work, life and family pressures

If not everyone wants to attend, that’s common — therapy can still help, and we’ll work with whoever is willing.

Support for every kind of family

Whoever is relevant to the concern is welcome

Families who are experiencing disharmony and are open to support can benefit from family therapy. That includes biological parents, step-parents, children, step-children, adopted children, grandparents and beyond.

Together, we’ll work toward steadier communication, healthier dynamics and a calmer home — at a pace that feels manageable for everyone involved.

Sound familiar?

You might recognise some of these

Families come to therapy for all kinds of reasons — you don’t need to be “in crisis” to benefit. You might be facing:

Frequent conflict or tension at home
A parent–child or teen relationship under strain
Communication that keeps breaking down
Adjusting after separation, divorce or a blended family
A child or teen’s behaviour affecting everyone
Grief, illness or a major change in the family
Ongoing disagreements about parenting
Feeling stuck in the same patterns as a family

Family therapy offers an impartial, caring space to be heard, ease the tension and find a calmer way forward together.

Your first session

What to expect when you begin

In the first session, your psychologist will hear from those who attend about what’s happening and what each person hopes will change. The focus isn’t on blame — it’s on understanding how the family works together and where small shifts can make a real difference.

Not everyone needs to attend every session; your psychologist will guide who it’s most helpful to include, and when. Sessions are practical and forward-looking, aimed at communication and connection you can carry back into everyday life.

Legal & court-related family therapy

Family therapy in a legal or court context

Sometimes families come to us in the middle of a legal process — and we’re experienced in providing family therapy in these situations, with care and impartiality.

Court-ordered family therapy. Where a court has ordered a family to attend therapy, we can provide it. We’ll work with your family constructively and even-handedly to meet the purpose of the order, while keeping the focus on genuine, therapeutic progress rather than taking sides.

Family therapy before court — through your lawyers. You don’t need to have reached court to seek support. We regularly work with families who are navigating a legal matter through their solicitors — for example, during private mediation or negotiations between lawyers — and want help communicating, co-parenting and reducing conflict while that process unfolds.

As part of this work, where it is required and specifically requested by your solicitor, your psychologist can prepare written family progress reports for your lawyer, outlining engagement in and progress through therapy. These reports are prepared as an additional service and additional fees apply. Your psychologist will explain what a report can and can’t cover, and confirm the fee, before any report is written.

Fees, rebates & getting started

Straightforward to begin — and more affordable than many expect

Whatever your family is navigating, getting started is straightforward.

There’s no referral needed to start. You can book online in a couple of minutes or send an enquiry, and our team will help you find the right appointment and psychologist for what you’re facing.

Many people are eligible for a Medicare rebate when their GP provides a Mental Health Care Plan, which lowers the out-of-pocket cost of each session. Rebate amounts differ for a Psychologist and a Clinical Psychologist — you’ll find current fees and rebates on our Fees & Rebates page. If you hold private health extras cover, you may be able to claim through that instead (you can’t claim both for the same session).

We see clients in person at our Bundall clinic — Upton Professional Suites, Level 1, 105 Upton Street — just minutes from Surfers Paradise, Southport, Broadbeach and Benowa, with easy parking on site. Prefer to meet from home? We also offer secure telehealth appointments right across Australia.

Common questions

You might be wondering…

Who should attend family therapy?+
Whoever is relevant to the concern — parents, children, step-family, grandparents or others. Your psychologist will guide who’s helpful to include, and when.
Is family therapy covered by Medicare?+
Family sessions are generally not Medicare-rebatable in the way individual mental-health treatment is. Contact us and we’ll explain the fees clearly before you book.
Do you help blended and separated families?+
Yes — including co-parenting, step-family adjustment and post-separation communication, always with an impartial, respectful approach.
What if not everyone wants to come?+
That’s common. Therapy can still help, and your psychologist will work with who’s willing to attend and advise on involving others over time.
Can we meet online?+
Yes. Telehealth is available Australia-wide, which can make it easier when family members live apart or have busy schedules.
Do you provide court-ordered family therapy?+
Yes. If a court has ordered your family to attend therapy, we can provide it — working constructively and impartially to meet the purpose of the order while keeping the focus on real therapeutic progress. Let us know when you enquire so we can arrange the right appointment.
We’re going through lawyers but haven’t been to court — can you still help?+
Absolutely. Many families we see are working through a legal matter via their solicitors — including during private mediation or negotiation between lawyers — and want support with communication, co-parenting and reducing conflict along the way. You don’t need to have reached court to begin.
Can you write a report for our lawyer?+
Where it is required and specifically requested by your solicitor, your psychologist can prepare a written family progress report on engagement in and progress through therapy. Reports are an additional service and additional fees apply; your psychologist will explain the scope and confirm the fee before writing one.
What happens in the first family therapy session?+
The first session is about understanding what’s happening for the family and what each person hopes will change — without blame. Your psychologist will also guide who it’s most helpful to include in future sessions.
