What is Telehealth?

Telehealth simply means having your appointment remotely — by secure video call or over the phone — instead of in person. It’s the same clinician, the same evidence-based care and the same session length as an in-clinic appointment; only the format changes.

For many people, telehealth psychology makes support far easier to access: no travel, no waiting room, and the comfort of a familiar space. It’s a well-established way of delivering psychological and allied-health care, and research shows telehealth therapy can be just as effective as face-to-face for many concerns.

What We Offer via Telehealth

Almost everything we do in the clinic is available by telehealth, including:

Individual therapy

Evidence-based individual therapy for a wide range of concerns.

Couples & family therapy

With everyone joining from the same room or from different locations — for couples or family sessions.

Psychological & clinical assessments

Including many psychological and clinical assessments that can be administered remotely.

Psychometric testing

Where the test allows, psychometric testing can be completed remotely — some assessments still need to be done in person, and we’ll let you know.

Diagnostic & psychological reports

Assessment, formulation and psychological reports delivered end-to-end.

Dietetics

Nutrition support with our Accredited Practising Dietitian, including eating-disorder and chronic-health support.

If you’re not sure whether your situation suits telehealth, just ask — we’re happy to talk it through and recommend the best format for you.

Two formats

Phone or Video — Your Choice

Video

A secure video link, so you and your clinician can see one another — ideal for therapy, assessment and reports.

Phone

A standard phone call, which suits people with limited internet, privacy needs, or who simply feel more comfortable talking without a camera.

You don’t need any special software or accounts — we’ll send you a simple, secure link and clear instructions before your appointment.

A good fit if

Who Telehealth Suits

Telehealth psychology and dietetics can be a good fit if you:

Live outside the Gold Coast, regionally, or anywhere in Australia
Have a busy schedule, work commitments or caring responsibilities
Have limited mobility, health concerns, or find leaving home difficult
Travel frequently or are away from home
Simply prefer the comfort and privacy of your own space

Sessions are held somewhere private and quiet, on a device that suits you — phone, tablet, laptop or computer.

The evidence

Is Telehealth as Effective as In-Person?

For many people, yes. A large body of clinical research supports telehealth as an effective way to deliver psychological therapy and allied-health care, with outcomes comparable to face-to-face for many presentations. Your clinician will always let you know if your particular situation would be better supported in person, and you’re welcome to mix telehealth and in-clinic appointments however suits you.

Medicare Rebates & Private Health Cover

The same rebates apply to telehealth as to in-clinic appointments.

Clinical Psychologist
$149.05
per session
Registered Psychologist
$101.55

Accredited Practising Dietitian

Medicare

With a valid referral — a GP Mental Health Care Plan for psychology, or a Chronic Disease Management plan for dietetics — eligible clients can claim the same rebate for telehealth as for face-to-face. See Medicare’s Better Access initiative.

Private health cover

Many private health funds cover telehealth psychology through their extras. Vitality Unleashed is a recognised provider; the rebate you receive depends on your fund and level of cover.

Please note you can claim through Medicare or private health for a given session, but not both. If you’re unsure what you’re eligible for, our reception team is happy to help. See our fees & rebates page →

Simple by design

What You’ll Need

For a video session you’ll need:

A private, quiet space where you won’t be interrupted
A phone, tablet, laptop or computer with a camera and microphone
A reasonable internet connection

For a phone session, you simply need a private space and phone reception. We’ll send everything you need — including your secure link — ahead of time.

Three ways to start

Booking a Telehealth Appointment

Getting started is the same as booking any appointment. When booking, just choose telehealth (phone or video) as your appointment type, or mention it in your enquiry.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Telehealth

Do I need a referral for telehealth?+
No — you can book telehealth privately without a referral. A referral (a GP Mental Health Care Plan for psychology, or a Chronic Disease Management plan for dietetics) is only needed to claim a Medicare rebate.
Are the Medicare rebates the same as in-person?+
Yes. With a valid referral, telehealth attracts the same Medicare rebate as an in-clinic appointment.
Does my private health fund cover telehealth?+
Many do, through extras cover. We’re a recognised provider — the exact rebate depends on your fund and policy. You can’t claim both Medicare and private health for the same session.
Can psychometric testing and assessments be done by telehealth?+
Many can, where the specific test allows valid remote administration. Some assessments still need to be completed in person — we’ll let you know what’s possible for your situation.
Can couples or family therapy be done by telehealth?+
Yes. Participants can join from the same room or from different locations, whichever works for everyone.
Is telehealth private and secure?+
Yes. Video sessions use a secure link, and the same confidentiality and privacy standards apply as they do in the clinic.
Which areas do you cover?+
Telehealth is available Australia-wide. Our in-person clinic is in Bundall on the Gold Coast.

Support from wherever you are

No referral needed to start — a plan is only required if you’d like to claim a Medicare rebate.
