Cognitive & Neuropsychological Assessment on the Gold Coast

If you have noticed changes in memory, attention or thinking — in yourself, your teen or your child — a cognitive assessment can help you understand what is going on. We take a full-picture approach, carefully documenting current thinking skills and the factors that can affect them, so you have clear information to move forward. We see adults, adolescents and children in person at our Bundall clinic, with telehealth available across Australia where it suits your needs. Our role is to work alongside your medical team, not in place of them.

What this assessment involves

A cognitive assessment is a structured, evidence-based process, and we will guide you through every step. It usually begins with a relaxed clinical interview and a review of your history — what has changed, when, and how it is affecting day-to-day life. From there we use standardised, well-researched tests that gently explore different thinking skills, including memory, attention, processing speed, language, and executive skills such as planning and problem-solving.

We also consider other things that can influence how we think and concentrate, such as mood, sleep, medication and pain, so the picture is fair and complete. You then receive a clear written report in plain language, explaining what we found and what it means. This report can also serve as a baseline — a snapshot of thinking skills at a point in time — that can be repeated later to track recovery or change.

Assessment for adults, adolescents and children

We tailor the assessment to each person’s age, situation and goals.

Adults

For adults, an assessment can help make sense of concussion or traumatic brain injury, recovery after a stroke, or changes in memory and thinking — including the kinds of changes that can come with ageing. It provides a clear profile of your current strengths and difficulties and a baseline you can return to over time. Importantly, it gives your GP, specialist or neurologist detailed information to support their care and your everyday functioning.

Adolescents

For teenagers, assessment most often follows a concussion — including sport-related concussion — or another acquired brain injury. We look at how thinking skills may have changed and what that means for learning, and we help plan a safe, well-paced return to study and sport. The goal is to support recovery while keeping your teen connected to the things that matter to them.

Children

For children, we focus on the impact of concussion, including sporting knocks, and other acquired brain injury. We gently assess how these events may be affecting learning and attention, and we offer practical guidance for a safe return to school and play. Everything is done in a friendly, unhurried way so your child feels comfortable throughout.

Alongside your medical team

An important note

A cognitive assessment works alongside medical care — it does not replace it. Where a condition such as dementia, a neurological illness, or a brain injury may be involved, diagnosis and treatment are led by your GP and medical specialists, such as a neurologist. Our assessment adds detailed, standardised information about thinking skills to support their decisions and your care. Please know that noticing changes does not mean the worst; there are many possible reasons for changes in memory and thinking, and a careful assessment simply helps everyone understand the picture more clearly.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Can you tell me if I have dementia or a neurological condition?+
Our assessment provides detailed information about thinking skills, but diagnosis of dementia or a neurological condition is led by your GP and medical specialists. We work alongside them, and our report supports that care.
Do I need a referral?+
No referral is needed to begin. If you would like your results shared with your GP, specialist or neurologist, we are very happy to do that with your consent.
Will I need medication after the assessment?+
Psychologists do not prescribe medication. If medication is relevant, that is a conversation for your GP or medical specialist, and our report can help inform it.
Can the assessment be repeated later?+
Yes. Because the assessment creates a baseline, it can be repeated over time to track recovery or change — this is often useful after a concussion or brain injury.
