What this assessment involves

A good learning assessment is a process, not a single test. It follows a structured, evidence-based path so the conclusions can be trusted and the recommendations actually fit. Here’s what that usually looks like:

  • ✦ A clinical interview to understand the concerns, the history and what a typical day of learning or work looks like.
  • ✦ Background and history review, including schooling, developmental history and any earlier reports. For children and teens, we gather input from parents and, with consent, teachers.
  • ✦ Standardised testing. We generally pair cognitive or ability testing (how a person reasons and processes information) with academic achievement testing (reading, writing, spelling and maths against expected levels). We also look at the underlying skills that support learning, such as phonological processing, working memory and processing speed.
  • ✦ Considering other factors. Part of our job is working out whether the difficulty is a specific learning disorder or is better explained by something else, such as attention difficulties, anxiety, interrupted schooling, English as an additional language, or an uncorrected vision or hearing issue. Getting this right means the right support follows.

The outcome is a clear, written report that explains the findings in plain language and sets out practical, individualised recommendations, including strengths we’ve identified along the way.

Do I need a referral?+
No. You can enquire or book directly with us. A GP referral and Mental Health Care Plan only become relevant if you go on to have rebatable follow-up therapy.
Can an assessment diagnose dyslexia, dysgraphia or dyscalculia?+
Yes. Where the evidence supports it, an assessment can identify a Specific Learning Disorder in reading (dyslexia), written expression or spelling (dysgraphia) or mathematics (dyscalculia), and rule out other explanations.
How do you tell a learning difficulty from something like attention or anxiety?+
That’s a core part of the process. We look at history, testing and other factors, because difficulties like attention, anxiety, interrupted schooling or language background can look similar, and the right support depends on getting the cause right.
My child is very young — is it too early to assess?+
It’s worth a conversation. We can talk through what we’re seeing and whether now is the right time, and for children we always draw on parent and, with consent, teacher input to build the full picture.
