Memory, Attention & Executive Functioning Assessment on the Gold Coast

If thinking feels harder than it should — trouble concentrating, forgetting things, or struggling to get started and stay organised — an assessment can help you understand why. We work with adults, adolescents and children to map a clear picture of everyday thinking skills, then make sense of what’s driving the difficulty so support is properly targeted. Assessments are available in person at our Bundall clinic and, where suitable, by telehealth across Australia.

Executive functioning skills mind map — working memory, attention, planning, organisation and emotional control — memory, attention and executive functioning assessment on the Gold Coast

What this assessment involves

This is a structured, evidence-based process, and we explain each step as we go. It usually includes:

  • A clinical interview and history review — we talk through your concerns, how they show up day to day, and any relevant health, developmental or life factors.
  • Standardised testing of the relevant thinking skills — attention and concentration, working memory, processing speed, learning and memory, and executive functions such as planning, organisation, getting started, self-monitoring and mental flexibility.
  • Consideration of other contributing factors — such as stress, mood, sleep, or a recent health event, so we’re not looking at test scores in isolation.
  • A clear written report — mapping your profile of strengths and difficulties, what’s likely driving the problem, and practical recommendations you can actually use.

The aim is a genuine picture of how you (or your child) think and learn — not just a set of numbers.

Assessment for adults, adolescents and children

The same core thinking skills matter at every age — but how difficulties show up, and what we look for, changes across the lifespan.

Adults

Many adults come to us with “brain fog”, forgetfulness, difficulty focusing at work, or a sense that their thinking has shifted after illness, stress or a health event. Assessment builds a clear profile of your attention, memory and executive skills and helps clarify what’s behind the change. From there, you get tailored strategies and, where useful, information to guide a GP or specialist review.

Adolescents

As school and life demands ramp up, some teens struggle with study, planning, time management and growing independence. We look at how they take in, hold and organise information, and where the sticking points really are. The report translates this into practical supports at home and school, and reasonable adjustments where they’re warranted.

Children

Children may have trouble following instructions, staying organised, remembering routines, or performing below their apparent ability at school. Assessment helps tell the difference between an attention or learning difficulty, developmental variation, and other factors that can affect thinking. You leave with a clear understanding of your child’s profile and targeted next steps.

Worth knowing

An important note

Difficulties with memory, attention and executive function have many possible causes — ADHD, stress or anxiety, low mood, poor sleep, a neurological cause, or simply normal variation. Our assessment describes the profile and helps clarify what’s contributing; where a medical or neurological cause is possible, we recommend the right review rather than assuming, and we work alongside your GP and specialists. If your main concern is a significant change or decline in memory, that is better covered by our Cognitive Decline & Neurological Conditions assessment.

Related support at our clinic

An assessment is often the starting point, not the finish line. If the results point that way, our psychologists can help with strategies for attention, organisation and study skills, and support for the stress, anxiety or low mood that so often travels alongside these difficulties.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a referral?+
No. You can contact us and begin without a referral. If a GP or specialist has asked for the assessment, bring any relevant information along and we’ll factor it in.
Will this tell me if I have ADHD?+
It can be an important part of that picture. The assessment maps your thinking profile and helps clarify what’s contributing to the difficulty, including whether ADHD is likely. Where a formal diagnosis or medication question is involved, we work alongside your GP and relevant specialists.
Can it be done by telehealth?+
Often, yes. Much of the process works well by secure video, and we may use PsychTesting Online for suitable testing. We’ll advise if any part is better done in person at Bundall.
How long does it take and what will I receive?+
It varies with the questions being asked, so we’ll give you an estimate when we scope your assessment. You’ll receive a clear written report setting out your profile of strengths and difficulties, likely contributing factors, and practical recommendations.
